Autoimmune Association Announces Inaugural Hope Journey Walk Inviting Communities to “Lace Up for Hope”
The Autoimmune Association is proud to announce the inaugural Hope Journey Walk, a national fundraising and awareness event that will take place on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and virtually across the country.
Every step taken during the Autoimmune Association Hope Journey Walk helps raise awareness and critical funds for autoimmune disease research, advocacy, and support. Whether walking through the Smithsonian National Zoo or participating virtually on a treadmill, in a local park, or at a hometown zoo, participants nationwide will be united in purpose: to walk for hope, to walk in honor, and to walk for a brighter future for all those living with autoimmune disease.
“The Autoimmune Association Hope Journey Walk is a new way for autoimmune patients, advocates, and families to come together and uplift one another,” said Molly Murray, president and CEO of the Autoimmune Association. “It serves as a powerful symbol for those living with autoimmune disease that they are not alone on this journey. The Autoimmune Association is with them every step of the way. Whether walking in person or virtually, I am honored to take these steps together.”
This walk is more critical than ever. Nearly 50 million Americans—or 1 in 5 people—live with an autoimmune disease, and that number is rising at an alarming rate of 3–12% every year. With over 100 known autoimmune diseases and no cures currently available, patients face long, complex journeys. On average, it takes 4.5 years and visits to four different doctors to receive an accurate diagnosis. Autoimmune diseases cost the U.S. economy approximately $180 billion annually in direct healthcare expenses, not to mention the billions more in lost productivity. And for many patients, one autoimmune condition is just the beginning—1 in 4 will go on to develop at least one more. The Hope Journey Walk shines a light on these urgent challenges and fuels the momentum for change.
Participants can register individually or form teams with friends, families, or coworkers. Registration fees are $30 for in-person attendance at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. during the early bird period (June 5–30 with promo code HOPE25) and $35 after June 30. Virtual registration is $20 during the early bird period (June 5–30 with promo code HOPE25) and $25 after June 30.
Each registrant will receive a personal fundraising page to share with their network, helping to spread awareness and drive support. Individuals who reach specific fundraising levels will earn the following incentives:
- $100–$499 raised: Hope Journey-branded shoelaces
- $500–$999 raised: Shoelaces + Hope Journey water bottle
- $1,000+ raised: Shoelaces + water bottle + Hope Journey hat
“Lacing Up for Hope” is more than a tagline—it’s a call to action. Every shoelace tied is a symbol of connection. Every step taken is a commitment to progress. Join us on this journey, wherever you are, and help us create a future filled with hope, support, and community.
